The Tells

Things the sport believes about who wins a fight, checked against the record. Most of them will turn out to be nothing. That's the job.

We test whether something predicts a result, not why it does. A marker that reliably says what happens next is worth having even when the reason behind it is something else entirely, and working out which is a harder question we mostly can't answer from a scoreboard.

97 imagined. 3 tested. 1 counting.

Written down and frozen before the data lands, so the answer can't be talked into shape after the fact. These have no verdict yet because they haven't earned one.

On the list

Written down, not yet checked. Some of these need data we don't have.

Fight week9

  • Arrival date in fight cityAcclimation days (altitude/timezone) affect performance, especially cardio
  • Corner compositionHead coach absent / B-team corner signals a deprioritized camp

  • Staredown behaviorBreaking eye contact, forced aggression, or nervous smiling leaks confidence state
  • Weigh-in body conditionVisibly drawn/depleted fighters underperform; rehydration bounce size matters
  • Weight miss behaviorNot just missing weight but how close and how panicked on the scale

Physical and biometric11

  • Breathing tellsVisible mouth breathing, septum history: gas tank proxy nobody logs
  • Explosive-twitch decayFirst-step speed visibly slowing; age shows in the legs before the record
  • Eye damage historyPokes, retina issues, orbital fractures: vision decline is career-quiet until it isn't
  • Frame aging / division outgrowthFighters visibly outgrowing their division: the cut gets unnatural before the misses start
  • Hand injuries weighted by styleBrittle hands matter more for volume boxers than grapplers; weight injury by striking dependence
  • Late starter freshnessStarted MMA late = less mileage at same age; birthdays overstate their decline
  • Lead leg mileageCalf-kick era damage accumulates on movement-based fighters whose game dies with the lead leg
  • Listed vs real measurementsListed reach/height lie; corrected numbers change matchup math
  • Pre-UFC mileageKickboxing wars and regional-scene damage before the UFC count as miles the record hides
  • Recurring jointSame knee rebuilt twice: structural reliability, weighted vs their game
  • Stance conversion depthNatural southpaws vs learned switchers: converted stances crack under pressure

The promotion11

  • Card position changeMoved up or down from announcement leaks promotional confidence or backstage info
  • Judge assignmentJudges with known scoring tendencies (wrestling-friendly, damage-first) interact with fighter style

  • Promotional investmentEmbedded screen time, poster placement, press push: the UFC signals who it believes in
  • Public contract beefOpen negotiation war with the promotion during camp
  • Rebooking historyFights rebooked after cancellations mean someone ran two camps for one opponent
  • Referee assignmentRefs who let grappling breathe vs quick stand-ups; early vs late stoppage tendencies change live paths to victory

  • Short-notice replacement classReplacement fighters are an archetype; how originals historically fare vs each replacement type
  • Title shot danglingAnnounced stakes (winner gets a shot) clarify motivation asymmetrically
  • Venue/crowd contextApex silence vs arena hostility affects specific fighter types differently

Career trajectory10

  • Cohort fate (actuarial comps)What happened to statistically similar fighters at this exact career point
  • Inflection eventsGym switch, coach death, first sub loss, first weight miss: flag and track next 2-3 fights
  • KO loss cadenceTime and fights between KO losses, not the count: whether the gap shortens is a different signal from how many there have been
  • Opponent quality slopeA streak vs declining names differs from a streak vs risers
  • Output slope (recent vs career)SLpM over last 5 vs career: same number rising vs falling means different fighters
  • Personal layoff responseFighter-specific history of returning sharp vs rusty beats generic layoff days
  • Post-title-loss hangoverTrajectory after losing a belt/title shot shows a motivation cliff
  • Power is the last thing to goSpeed, chin and volume fade with age and mileage; knockdown rate and KO-by-strikes rate hold up longer than any of them
  • Stat resistance scoreGap between actual win% and stat-predicted win%; chronic overperformers are real until they aren't
  • Style driftWrestlers whose TD attempts trend to zero are decline cases becoming worse strikers

Matchups12

  • Style triangle recordRecord vs stance/archetype (southpaws, pressure fighters, wrestlers) predicts archetype-specific outcomes
  • Victory path asymmetryCount live paths to victory (KO/sub/decision) each way; more paths wins coin flips
  • Vulnerability tagsQualitative tags (loses to pressure, loses to motion, folds to body work) validated against results
  • Weighted shared opponentsMMA math works when weighted by recency and opponent quality, not raw W/L
